Here under the lake it was cool, refreshing and quite comfortable. Of course she couldn't stay much longer. She'd been down here for two hours already. Not long hours mind you. She quite enjoyed being under the water with all the life and the sights. To her, this place was indeed her heaven on earth.
The temperature upside had reach to a horrid 90 degrees Fahrenheit today. To most that might not be so bad, but she was an Ice Mage and that meant that the temperature was more than sickening. It was truly dreadful. Oh sure she could make it snow while around this large body of water, but her powers would eventually drain on her and she'd be left in the heat with nothing to keep her cool and comfortable. Her usual trick was to spend the hottest couple of hours in the day here, under the lake and deep within the cooling confines of the glorious waters that now surrounded her. It was time now, she'd have to surface, though slowly, she'd gone pretty deep this time and even as a Mage, she'd have to be careful how fast she rose to the surface.
Upwards she drifted, slowly making her way to meet the sun and its terrible heat. She'd only have a few hours of real heat to contend with and she would spend those hours in the shade of the tree grove just 4 feet from the water line. It was her daily routine, and one of much amusement at times. This was the time of day when the children at the lake would seek her out for a small ice treat after they'd spent the hotter hours playing in the sandy beach line with their sand castles and dreams.
It took her another 20 minutes but now her head emerged from the lake. She smiled as she heard the children remark at the time of day when they saw her swimming towards the shore. They called her the mermaid of the lake, though of course that was silly, but she allowed their endearing tag name to be put upon her. They were kids and who was she to ruin their imaginations.
Once she could walk, she did so, slowly out for the lake. The water took longer to drain from her near naked body as she willed it to. Her clothing, or lack there of made her not in the least shy. The parts that need covering were covered, though that was about it. Her long wet locks flowed down her shoulders and cascades over her back, ending just where the curve of her back began.
The children had begun racing toward the spot they knew her things would be and waited with excited expectations. Of course, she wouldn't disappoint. She made her way to the shade and knelt before a large sack and began to pull small wooden cups from it. She rummaged around and found a few more thing such a Maple and sugar, colouring and assorted other treats and then a big jug of water, this she opened first. A few more minutes and she was taking orders for an array of delightful frozen icies that she made with a smile and many giggles for, and from, the children. When the children had all gotten what they wished for, she finished off her own ice treat and after repacking, leaned herself against a tree and sat back silently enjoying the coldness of the ice crystals as they melted away down her throat and in her mouth. Every now and again a child would come by and place their cup next to her bag and thank her. To this she would smile warmly and nod in their direction.
This was the reason she seldom, if ever, migrated to cooler climates. This right here, the laughter of the children, their smiles and of course, their appreciation for what she could do for them no matter their wealth or lack there of. She didn't do it for money, she did it for smiles.
For three years now she had decided to stay it out. Stay the Spring and summer months and simply wait for the cool weather to return. She was addicted to the smiles. The children didn't talk to her much. Every now and again she'd get one that would just come and sit with her and talk, she would listen. Sometimes even the young ones needed a good ear to listen. Most of the time spent out here though was in thought or study, she always had a few books in her sack to go through. Today seemed a good day to just simply look out over the beautiful lake and think, wonder about things and perhaps dream lazily while she waited for the sun to go down.
