"A year," she mumbled in muted recognition. She thought of her last year... pain and loss seemed to be a universal decree.
A hand reached out of its own accord, exactly to the middle distance whereupon it was immediately lost in improper space. eleisia stared at the appendage as though it were not her own; she could not pull it back without looking as though she were repulsed, could not stretch it further without invading Sukebe's personal space.
"I-" eleisia's stutter was irreparable now. "I don't u-usually..." She sighed deeply.
"I wouldn't ordinarily ask such a thing, but perhaps-" she tried not to let her uneasy eye stray upward toward the eyeholes of Sukebe's mask, for fear of losing her nerve. "Perhaps you would tell me about your Delilah? Perhaps... one day?"

Sukebe was approaching dangerous territory. If it allowed too much to be known, it could be traced back to the church, revealing the crime which it had committed. How would Eleisia react were she aware of what darkness lay in Sukebe's past? Would she be horrified? Would she be understanding?
Almost automatically, Sukebe hands met Eleisia's outstretched hand. "Perhaps, if you are not too busy at the moment, we could maybe talk in a more private location?"
If they were to talk further, it would have to be where no passing ears could hear what they were not meant to hear.

Warm, strong fingers slid over eleisia's sensitive palm, and the transfer of energy was incredible. Overloaded, she could not process logically, only be lifted up and carried by wave after wave of emotion and sensation and broadcast thought. As though through a wind tunnel, she heard Sukebe's request; she had to struggle to focus on words that seemed to come so slowly in comparison to the lightspeed of nervous fear and hopeful kindness.
With concentration, she knitted her brow together, forcing words out of her mouth. Her own voice sounded so far away. "Of course..."
Her heart couldn't possibly beat any faster...
"...there's no one in the rectory..."
Her words didn't seem to make it out of her mouth. They were so loud in her head, but by the time they made it to her lips, they passed almost as a whisper.
"...we can go there now."
Her eyes were locked on their joined hands, the point of contact seemed electrified.

Eleisia's words were very quiet, almost inaudible. They were very soft and gentle, yet had an almost inescapable hold over Sukebe.
"Than, we should go there. I trust you would know this place better than I would. So, perhaps you should lead the way?" suggested Sukebe.

eleisia nodded breathlessly, then turned away. There was no doubt in her mind that Sukebe would follow. Of course, that assurance was cemented by the pairing of their hands. kel did her best not to alarm the community for the most part, but frankly, she did not give one good damn what they thought of her today. In point of fact, she didn't have the spare thought to spend in the first place.
Her hand felt welded to Sukebe's, and a magnetic force seemed to form an energetic thread through their palms. Her feet moving surely too fast for anyone to keep up, she moved smoothly through the doorway, out into the main room of the library, navigated the maze of tables and stacks and displaced sculpture with dizzy abandon. Miraculously, Sukebe was right there. Or maybe magickally.
As soon as they reached the curtained alcove leading outside, eleisia's desert-bred eyelids lowered, filtering the light through her thick brown lashes. She paused a moment, looking up at Sukebe for reassurance before passing out into the blazing light of day. Sun-warmed earth pressed up against her feet, filling the hollows of her arches. She pulled Sukebe along behind her, and entered the rectory, allowing dilated pupils to adjust before plunging them into the dim cool.

With little more than a nod, Eleisia had taken off, pulling Sukebe with her. She weaved through the many obstacles of the library with speed and grace, Sukebe moving just as quickly to keep up with her. But even so, it seemed unlikely that Sukebe would be left behind, Eleisia had held tightly onto Sukebe's hand, and didn't seem to have any intention to let go.
Sukebe seemed to be wisked away to the past. Early morning, woken up from a pleasant dream, Delilah was pulling on that very same hand. "Come on!" she was saying, "You can't sleep in on my birthday!" Running through hallway after hallway. Delilah had barely given the opportunity to change out of nightcloths. Finally they reach a room holding the biggest birthday cake they had ever laid eyes on.
Sukebe realized that Eleisia had stopped, almost in time with the memory. Sukebe nodded to continue, and they both headed out into the open light of day. Soon after, they had reached the rectory. And so they entered, the coolness being a welcome alternative to the heat outside. Truly, it was very calm here, and Sukebe could've been quite relaxed had it not been aware that their hands were still joined, and the two of them alone.
Atempting to break the silence, Sukebe said awkwardly, "So, this is the rectory? It's... quite nice here."

Sukebe's remark had kel seeing her hideaway with new eyes. The stone floors had seemed cold before, and she had covered them liberally with thickly woven rugs. Now the hewn rock seemed like a thoughtful nod to the beginnings of time. The dark woods of her bookcases and desks created a secret world, and the loneliness of her work suddenly seemed revealed to her in a blinding flash of insight.
She looked around, gathering details, and found none. In her mind, eleisia was glib and enchanting, completely able to give the grand tour and demonstrate total hospitality. She even had the speech prepared, about privacy and the seclusion of the rectory over her ever-popular desk in the main building.
Unfortunately, her mouth seemed permanently suspended from tungsten wire, and she felt as though speech might unhinge her jaw, if not her wits.
She looked up, seeking Sukebe's eyes, and, finding the masked face looking in her direction, folded her legs beneath her to sit absently on a generously padded cushion. She waved an arm for Sukebe to join her and tell her more of the story that haunted its life.
"Please..." It was all kel could get out. The librarian had no words.
