She'd just finished shopping and had the saddlebags all filled up and ready to go when it started raining. At first it didn't seem so bad but then the wind started and in the time it took her to untie and mount Fallon for the ride home she was smack in the middle of a downpour with the gusts of wind picking up quickly. “Of Course!” She growled as she turned her horse about and headed for home.
As they made their way through the now empty streets; a few people still rushing to get out of the storm, the lightning came. “Just perfect.” She growled again.
She didn't want to move Fallon too fast over the cobbled street because she didn't want to take the chance he'd go lame from slipping aside from the hard stones simply not being good to run a horse on. So, they walked. When she reached the path that would lead them to her house she was able to trot him a little bit and in about 30 minutes they had made it back.
Thankfully there was a small stable in her backyard she'd been given permission to build last year after she'd acquired Fallon and so she wouldn't have to ride him all the way back to the main stable tonight. She slowed him down to a walk and rounded her house to the back. She looked behind her at the bulging packs and thought a moment and then smiled. She prompted him to side up to her bedroom window and once close enough, she slid it open with a bit of thought and then untied and lifted the packs one at a time through the open window and let them fall softly onto her bed. She then closed her window in the same manner as she'd opened it and then rode him to the little stable, hopped off and lead him inside.
Now she closed the door behind them and smiled at him. “Sorry but you'll just have to deal with the small place tonight buddy.” She spoke softly to her horse as she leaned forward and kissed his cheek. It didn't take her long to get his tack off and then after a quick rub down with his saddle blanket, she gathered his things and moved back out into the rain.
She brought his things inside and set them against the wall and then scurried into the panty where she always had a bale of hay on the floor for just these occasions. She grabbed up a flake and then after opening the back door from the kitchen sprinted across the yard and opened the top porting of the stall and dumped the hay in his feeder. She checked and filled his water and after closing him up for the night returned to the house once more.
By this time Miranda was absolutely soaked and so she stripped down in the kitchen and tossed her clothes in the wash sink. She then went to her room and grabbed up a pair of baggy cotton pants and a sweatshirt and tossed them on. She figured she'd take a bath and so moved to the washroom where she turned the water on and waited and waited and waited... “Oh well this night just CAN”T get any worse.” She growled again. Turning around she marched off back through the kitchen and into the pantry where she lifted a small door in the floor and headed down. With a flick of her wrist she produced enough light to see by and moved to the furnace where the water was heated from... it was out. “Of COURSE!” She kicked the thing. After she looked around for a bit she realized she’d forgotten to grab a new flint from the market and then sighed. “Well, I guess it can get worse.” She resigned.
She didn't know enough about fire to want to try and start one in her own home otherwise there wouldn't have been a problem but as it was, there was. She headed back upstairs, bumping her head on the low ceiling as she did and then closed the floor door and moved to the front room where the wet saddle and bridle sat. She reached behind her and a towel moved from the kitchen to her hand and took it then wiped the leather off as best she could.
When that was all done she went and grabbed her groceries off her bed and moved back to the kitchen and put them all away. She looked around her kitchen and thought a moment and a small smile turned up her lips as she remembered that at least she had a bottle of wine to help warm her up and that's what she did. She pulled the bottle from the shelf, not bothering with a cup and opened it and took a good long drink. She then walked back into the front room, plopped herself on the couch, snatched the book on canine anatomy and started reading. After a few minutes she realized she was cold so she 'summoned' her blanket from the bedroom and snuggled into it then continued to study thinking that tonight she wouldn't have any interruptions due to rain, wind, lighting and thunder.
